Hummer vehicles are synonymous with power, capability, and comfort, but the original lineup came to its natural end in 2010 as their gas-guzzling nature became an increasingly severe drawback. But the great news for Hummer fans is that the nameplate is back, with two new models supplying all the performance of the originals but running entirely off battery power.
The new 2022 Hummer EV is built around a new, all-electric powertrain, and will be available in two formats: a pickup, and an SUV. Here's what you need to know ahead of their forthcoming launch.
Under the Hood: Hummer EV Pickup vs Hummer EV SUV
Although the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV are based around the same three-motor design, they offer slightly different amounts of power and range.
The SUV version sets new standards for horsepower in its segment, with a maximum output of fully 830 hp passed to all-wheel drive as standard. This level of power produces outstanding performance, with an estimated 0-97km/h acceleration time of just 3.5 seconds.
And while that's impressive enough, the Hummer EV pickup goes a step further. The engine output is cranked up to fully 1,000hp, resulting in a searing 0-97km/h time of 3.0 seconds, an incredible level of performance for a pickup truck.
Both Hummer EV models quote a torque rating of 11,500lb-ft, but while that's certainly an impressive figure, it should be noted that GMC calculates the torque in a slightly different way to most other EV manufacturers, making direct comparisons a little difficult.
Nonetheless, the torque is plenty enough to produce some impressive capability figures for the pickup, with a maximum towing capacity of 3,409kg backed up by a payload rating of up to 591kg. As of yet, no towing capacity has been confirmed for the SUV, although with a suitable hitch installed, it's likely to be approaching the highest in its class
Battery, Range, and Charging
The amazing performance of the Hummer EV is in large part down to the use of advanced battery technology. Built around a 212.5 kWh battery using the latest GMC Ultium design, the Hummer EV boasts some impressive range figures as well as high output, with the pickup managing up to 560km of driving on a full charge and the SUV up to 480km.
Charging will also be satisfyingly quick and efficient. Although the Hummer is compatible with both Level 1 and Level 2 domestic charging stations, the real performance boost comes when hooking up to a commercial DC Fast Charger. Thanks to its 800V architecture and 350-kWh capability, the Hummer can add up to 100km of range in as little as ten minutes.
Hummer EV Pickup and SUV Comparison - In Figures
Exterior Design
As you'd expect from a Hummer, the new EV is a large and chunky vehicle in both its formats. However, it also boasts a certain amount of confident style, with plenty of curves to round out its hefty dimensions.
But perhaps the most notable exterior feature is the roof, made up of removable transparent panels. Leave them in place and the Hummer effectively has a huge panoramic moonroof to give the cabin a bright and roomy feel. Take the panels away - they fit perfectly in the front trunk - and the Hummer transforms into a convertible for invigorating open-air driving.
Interior and Technology
Both Hummer EV models will have a seating capacity of up to five, with the cabin boasting as much spaciousness as you'd expect from the generous exterior dimensions. The cabin is also equipped to a luxurious level, with technology, in particular, playing a leading role.
Infotainment is handled via a mammoth 13.4” touchscreen display, which sits alongside a 12.3” digital instrument cluster for good measure. Standard features include a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, while the GM Onstar telematics system is also included for increased vehicle security.
Driver assistance features include the Super Cruise system which provides hands-free, semi-autonomous driving on paved roads, capable of handling lane changes and traffic distancing automatically.
And lastly for the interior, a premium Bose 14-speaker sound system has been designed specifically for the Hummer EV, delivering high-end surround sound throughout the cabin.
2022 Hummer EV Release Date
The Hummer EV will arrive in Canada in two stages. The pickup model is expected in the fall of 2022, while the SUV is set to follow in early 2023.
